The San Francisco 49ers recently invited a few free-agent wide receivers such as Tavon Austin and JJ Nelson for a workout. It appears they liked what they saw from the pair.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the 49ers plan to sign both of the to help fill the void left by wide receiver Deebo Samuel to start the 2020 NFL season

49ers plan to sign veteran WRs J.J. Nelson and Tavon Austin, pending physicals, per league source. Added depth in an area in which Deebo Samuel is likely to miss the start of the season.

Samuel is still recovering from a broken foot he suffered during the offseason. Since a timetable for his potential return has not been set, San Francisco is taking precautions by shoring up some much-needed depth in the receiving corps.

Both Nelson and Austin provide an explosive element to the 49ers' offense. Austin established himself as a versatile, flex option with the Los Angeles Rams. He is hoping to find his footing following an underwhelming stint with the Dallas Cowboys that saw him finish the 2019 campaign with 11 receptions for 171 yards and a touchdown.

Meanwhile, Nelson emerged as quite a deep threat for the Arizona Cardinals by averaging 18.6 yards per reception. He is also looking to bounce back from a rough year with the Las Vegas Raiders where he only registered four receptions for 36 yards and a touchdown.

Although quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has an affinity for the short game, the new additions should give him an opportunity to get the deep ball more involved in the passing game.
