The saying often goes if you have two quarterbacks you don't have one. In the case of the San Francisco 49ers, that doesn't appear to be the case.

Jimmy Garoppolo has been the presumed starter entering this season even after the 49ers traded up to select Trey Lance out of North Dakota State. With Lance showing out in the preseason, head coach Kyle Shanahan has become silent on the issue at hand.

Friday, 49ers general manager John Lynch appeared on KNBR. Via 49erswebzone.com, a two-quarterback system seems to be a real option for San Francisco this year.

“We haven’t shown a lot in the preseason as well in terms of the things we can do with both Trey and Jimmy. But that’s not only for us. That’s league wide. You really don’t know, going into the first couple of games, what you’re going to see.”

“That is something that we kind of are looking forward to, the amount of time that people are going to have to put in, preparing for each quarterback.”

While the GM for the 49ers didn't flatly confirm the idea, it does back up what Garoppolo hinted at earlier in the week when he revealed he had a conversation with Drew Brees about how he kept a rhythm when Taysom Hill would come into the game at quarterback for the New Orleans Saints.

“We talked about the situation for a little bit and how him and Taysom did it,” Garoppolo said. “And it’s a thing that I wasn’t really used to, I guess you could say. Just the in and out part of it. So, I was trying to pick his brain, how he handled that. He’d come out for a play or two and then go back in, how that all works…It’s happened a little bit in training camp just with some of the different types of things we’re doing with Trey [Lance].”

Perhaps a two-quarterback system will be the move for the 49ers to start the year.
