The San Francisco 49ers are just one win away from representing the NFC in the Super Bowl and there will be a ton of pressure on Jimmy Garoppolo to deliver a victory. Despite the added pressure, Steve Young predicts that Garoppolo will play well in the NFC Championship Game.
“When they’ve asked him to raise up and go win it, he did it,” Young said via The 49ers Insider Podcast. “Those are hard things to do. That just doesn’t happen. When you see it in the NFL and someone is able to do it, you go, once you’ve done it, you can do it again. You can keep doing it.
Jimmy Garoppolo Has Been Calm Under Pressure
Last week, Garoppolo took part in his first career start in the playoffs against the Minnesota Vikings. But the veteran signal-caller wasn't asked to do much as San Francisco gashed Minnesota's defense for 186 rushing yards.
While the running game was effective, Garoppolo completed 11 of his 19 attempts for 131 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. During the regular season, Garoppolo aired it out for 3,978 yards, 27 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions.
In addition, for the first time in his career, he was able to start in all 16 games. Even with his impressive numbers, many have labeled Garoppolo as the weakest link in San Francisco's offense.
After defeating the Vikings, the calm and collected quarterback will have to defeat the Green Bay Packers to advance to the Super Bowl. With Aaron Rodgers on the other side of the field, Garoppolo has to avoid making mistakes under center.
There are many people who are hesitant to instill trust in Garoppolo winning a game with his arm. But contrary to what most people believe, Young is confident that Garoppolo gets the job done on Sunday.
