San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan addressed with the media why rookie running back Trey Sermon is not getting any playing time. Shanahan provided details on Sermon's progress thus far during Wednesday's press conference.

“Yeah, you guys have asked that a lot and right now, it's nothing against Trey,” Shanahan said when asked what he needed to see out of the rookie for him to get more snaps.”Trey had an opportunity when guys got hurt and I thought he got better in each game with that. But he didn't do enough for us to put him ahead of Elijah or Jeff. And so it's pretty much as simple as that, like if Jeff wasn't out there or Elijah wasn't, he would have taken one of those roles.

The 49ers moved up in the 2021 NFL Draft to select Trey Sermon. Yet, it has been 6th round rookie running back Elijah Mitchell that has taken hold of the starting job.

Sermon has been a healthy scratch twice, and has registered only 31 carries for 135 yards. Meanwhile, Mitchell leads the team with 560 yards rushing. Mitchell got the chance after Raheem Mostert suffered a season-ending knee injury in the first week of the season.

Jeff Wilson Jr. has been in the mix for the 49ers for the last couple seasons. He filled in admirably last year when starters got hurt. Wilson Jr. rushed for 183 yards in a Week 16 matchup vs the division rival Arizona Cardinals. So, Shanahan has confidence he can exceed when given the chance.
