The future for San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is uncertain, and the 49ers may be looking to replace him this coming season.

Garoppolo has led the 49ers to a 22-8 record as a starting quarterback, while also leading the 49ers to the Super Bowl last season where they eventually lost to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Though this is an impressive record, it has come over a span of four seasons. The man out of Eastern Illinois has been battling injuries throughout his career as a 49er. He played nine games combined in the 2017 and 2018 seasons and managed to play only six games this season.

According to Grant Cohn of Sports Illustrated, Jimmy Gaoppolo suffered two high ankle sprains that kept him from playing a majority of the games this season, causing backup Nick Mullens to take charge. Along with a torn ACL from a couple of years back, Garoppolo is very susceptible to injury, a reason for why the 49ers may be looking for a change.

This is what Chris Mortensen of ESPN has to say on Garoppolo's situation in the Bay, via CBS Boston:

“Garoppolo’s injuries certainly complicate the picture. Kyle Shanahan, the coach said, he believes Garoppolo will be the quarterback in 2021, but he says he can’t say it with certainty. Most league insiders believe if there’s a better option, the 49ers will have somebody other than Garoppolo at the start of next season,” Mortensen said on ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown.

The New England Patriots are a possible destination for the former Patriot, as head coach Bill Belichick is looking for a change at his starting quarterback position as well.
