Marquise Goodwin’s tenure with the red and gold may be coming to an end. According to Matt Barrows of The Athletic, the San Francisco 49ers have “come close a couple of times” in trading their wide receiver.

It would not be the first time Goodwin’s name has been tossed up in the list of possible pieces being moved. Back in February, Head Coach Kyle Shanahan stated that the 49ers are open with the idea of trading Goodwin.

“We could [trade him], yeah. You also don’t get rid of valuable people just for nothing. There are lots of things that are open.”

Goodwin is currently the 49ers’ highest-paid wide receiver who is set to earn close to $5M next season. He only played nine games in 2019 due to recurring knee and foot injuries. His 12 receptions and one receiving touchdowns are his lowest since joining San Francisco.

The 49ers will be looking to improve on their run to the Super Bowl this past season. However, with only $13M in the 2020 salary cap to work on, bolstering the squad may necessitate some tough decisions for the squad.

Among the 49ers top targets for a long-term deal will certainly be George Kittle, who has already established himself as one of the premier tight ends in the league. Kittle is set to be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2020 season.

With Deebo Samuel, Jalen Hurd, and Kendrick Bourne ahead of him in the depth chart and the NFL Draft just three days away, moving Goodwin in exchange for valuable assets might make the most sense for the 49ers.
