The goal is for fans to be packed into the stands once the NFL regular season starts, but with the COVID-19 pandemic that might not be possible.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN who appeared on the The Woj Pod, if the NFL doesn’t have fans in the stands for the entire season, it could cost the league $3.2 billion, or $100 million per team.

Not having fans in the stands will crush every team’s revenue, but for some it would have a bigger impact on the field. Home field advantage is a big deal around the league.

Let’s look at the five NFL teams that would be most impacted if fans aren’t allowed in the stands.

Pittsburgh Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ home-field advantage is very real, but every game the Steelers play would be impacted with no fans in the stands, regardless the NFL venue. The Steelers’ Terrible Towel waves with pride throughout the stands, no matter if the team is at home or on the road. The Steelers’ crowd is loud, and the Terrible Towels are intimidating.

No fans in the stands is going to affect every team, but is it even a Steelers game if there are no Terrible Towels waving in the crowd?

Kansas City Chiefs

There are some who have argued the Chiefs’ home-field advantage has lost some of its luster but opposing teams still don’t want to go into Arrowhead Stadium, especially if they fall behind. In a 2014 Chiefs blowout victory of the New England Patriots, Arrowhead Stadium reached 142.2 decibels.

When a team falls behind, Chiefs fans seem to get louder and louder, and the Tomahawk Chop helps to add to the intimidation factor. If no fans are in the stands, we could see the Chiefs take a step back. If a visiting team is struggling and the fans aren’t there to get after them, panic may not set in as early and teams can stay competitive longer.

Minnesota Vikings

U.S. Bank Stadium is one of the hardest places to play in the NFL, especially against Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer’s defense. It’s too loud to think, especially when the Vikings make a big stop. On third down teams frequently have to call a timeout with the clock running down.

Without the crowd could the defense actually take a step back just based on that? Quarterbacks won’t have to worry about relaying their calls to the offense. The Vikings rely heavily on the crowd at home, and not having them could result in setbacks this season.

New Orleans Saints

Having an elite offense led by Drew Brees and home-field advantage at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome has been a recipe for success for the New Orleans Saints the last decade-plus.

The NFC South — and the NFL in general — is filled with good quarterbacks, which makes it even more important that the crowd is there to try and make an impact on them.

Come playoff time, the Saints not having fans could be a real big problem. Could it be enough to bounce them out of the postseason?

Seattle Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks’ fans are nicknamed the 12th Man for a reason. At CenturyLink Field, the crowd is rowdy, especially when an NFC West rival is in town. The rest of the division isn’t known for their home-field advantages, so the home crowd for the Seahawks is something that has always set them apart. No fans in the stands could be a real leveling of the playing field for a competitive division like the NFC West.
