Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid is set to miss a significant amount of time after he and the team decided to push through surgery to repair his meniscus injury.

According to the latest reports, Embiid will undergo surgery to repair his left meniscus injury in the upcoming week. While a recovery timeline has yet to be determined following the procedure, the 76ers big man is expected to “miss an extended period of time” as a result, per Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

When it comes to his surgery, a separate update from Shams Charania of The Athletic revealed that the procedure “will address a displaced flap of the meniscus.”

It is important to note, however, that it doesn't mean Joel Embiid is out for the season. Of course the lack of clear timeline is a bit concerning for 76ers fans, but Woj noted that Philly isn't closing the door on Embiid's return this 2023-24.

Joel Embiid has been dealing with an injury to his left knee for some time now. In fact, it has caused him to miss multiple games this season.

Unfortunately, the injury worsened during their recent clash with the Golden State Warriors when Dubs youngster Jonathan Kuminga accidentally fell on Embiid's left knee while fighting for a loose ball. Embiid exited the game, and it was eventually revealed that the incident worsened his knee problems.

The reigning NBA MVP missed their recent showdown with the Utah Jazz and Brooklyn Nets as a result and was already expected to sit out their upcoming meeting with the Dallas Mavericks. Now, it's uncertain when exactly he'll be able to get back.

Embiid is now surely out for the running for the MVP award due to the league's eligibility rules that require players to suit up for at least 65 games to qualify for the NBA awards. Nonetheless, it's certainly the last of his worries now.

Hopefully, the 29-year-old center will be able to return sooner rather than later. In the meantime while he's absent, All-Star guard Tyrese Maxey is expected to carry the scoring load for the 76ers, along with Kelly Oubre Jr. and Tobias Harris.
