Amazon Game Studios recently made news but not in a positive way. A hurricane of problems and canceled games surfaced which painted a grim image of the fledgling game studio. However, given Google's recent announcement to forego first-party game development, Amazon's new head Andy Jassy reaffirms his company's position in the development scene.

Mountains to Overcome

Jeff Bezos broke the news to his employees in a message that he would be stepping down as the company's CEO. This doesn't mean the end of his involvement with the massive retail company, but he will no longer hold the reins moving forward. Bezos stressed that his announcement does not point towards retirement.

In the process of his departure, Bezos announced Andy Jassy as his successor to the CEO post. Jassy quickly spoke out about the company's unsuccessful efforts at making their own games. Amazon Game Studios allegedly spent upwards of USD 500 million annually with no great games to show for it. Regardless of their past failures, Jassy had this to say regarding Amazon's future development plans.

“Being successful right away is obviously less stressful, but when it takes longer, it’s often sweeter. I believe this team will get there if we stay focused on what matters most.”

Jassy failed to address any of the issues that their studio has been accused of. However, Amazon's first-party game dreams will get nowhere unless they fix the crucial problems in their company. Currently, Amazon Game Studios faces allegations of gender discrimination and overall poor management.

One thing that's clear with all the announcements is that Amazon continues to see the game industry as a worthy avenue of investment. Luckily for Amazon, they have abundant resources to throw at game development while they try to figure out their own way.

Hopefully, Amazon will find its winning formula for game development now that they're under new management.
