The Los Angeles Angels have officially ruled out Anthony Rendon for the remainder of the year due to injury, the team announced on Friday. The veteran third baseman is set to undergo season-ending surgery on his right wrist early next week.

Rendon has dealt with the nagging wrist injury for much of the season, and the ailment worsened during the Angels’ May 27 home clash against the Toronto Blue Jays. He noted that his wrist “flared up” in the seventh inning of the contest, and the decision was then made the next day to place him on the 10-day injured list.

While there was concern that Rendon would not be available to play in a single game for the Angels in June, he managed to return off of the IL in time for the team’s home series opener with the New York Mets last Friday. This came after he was able to feature in on-field defensive activities and also hit the batting cages during his injury rehab.

Rendon’s return to action was short-lived, as he left the Angels’ road series opener against the Los Angeles Dodgers after aggravating his right wrist ailment. He went on to miss the Angels’ next two games, and even as interim manager Phil Nevin noted on Thursday that the one-time All-Star was “feeling much better” compared to Wednesday, the team has opted for the conservative route by granting him the green light to have surgery for his injury.

Rendon’s run with the Angels has been marred by injury. He was able to play in 52 games over the 2020 shortened campaign, where he ended up finishing 10th in the vote for the season’s American League MVP Award. However, he was held out of 104 total games last year, which included missing the team’s final 76 contests due to hamstring and hip injuries.

For now, the Angels will have the likes of Matt Duffy and Tyler Wade as options to patrol third base for the rest of the campaign.
