The Seattle Mariners have not been great through the first two months of the 2024 MLB season, but this might nevertheless be their big chance to win the American League West and make a deep playoff run. The Mariners are watching the rest of the American League West struggle in the early stages of this campaign. No other teams in the West are playing .500 ball. Even the defending World Series champion Texas Rangers and the annual ALCS-bound Houston Astros are under the break-even mark. Seattle is a modest 33-27 through 60 games, but that's good for a four-game lead in the division. The Mariners have failed to create a lot of distance between themselves and their pursuers, but they do have a multi-game lead in the division without having played elite-level baseball. If they can start to play really well — at the level they feel they are capable of — they might be able to run away with the division and play low-stress baseball in late August and early September. It's a big opportunity for the one MLB team which has never made the World Series, and just might have an unexpected path to a late-October journey of a lifetime.
The Mariners have certainly done the kind of thing they need to do this weekend in order to enhance their status as the A.L. West favorite: Beat up on bad teams. The Angels are not good. They lack Mike Trout in their lineup. Seattle needs to absolutely bury the Halos in order to rise to the top of the West and stay there. So far, so good: The Mariners have won each of the first two games of this series on Friday and Saturday and will try to collect another win on Sunday afternoon.

Why The Angels Could Cover The Spread
The Angels are due to have a game go in their direction. We keep saying it in betting situations because it's relevant: Even though one team might objectively be a lot better than another team, that doesn't mean it will win every game. Good baseball teams lose 60 or more games in most seasons. Bad teams win 60 or more. It's hard to sweep opponents, and the Mariners are trying to sweep the Angels. This could be the one game over the weekend which slips through Seattle's fingers. It's a lot easier to pick a good team over a bad team when the good team is coming off a loss. That is not the situation here.
Why The Mariners Could Cover The Spread
The Mariners have Luis Castillo on the hill. Castillo is a proven pitcher who should be able to feast against the Angels and their undermanned, Mike Trout-free lineup. Seattle has to like the matchup here.
