Ben Simmons enjoyed the most important night of his life on June 23rd 2016; he was drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers with the first pick of the NBA draft. These kind of special moments are not only momentous for the individual, but their friends and family too, as they can proudly watch their loved one’s dream come true.

In a horrific turn of events for the Simmons family, the post-draft jubilation did not last long, as Ben’s twenty-one year old cousin, Zachary Simmons was killed in a hit-and-run attack. This coming just days after a huge night for Simmons.

The incident took place in Hoboken, New Jersey, where the victim was crossing a street and an SUV hit him, fleeing the scene immediately.

Zachary’s mother told WCBS-TV that he had actually attended the NBA draft with Ben earlier in the week. The Australian-American decided to take to Twitter to express how he was feeling about the loss.

According to Foxsports.com, New York Police made an arrest on Friday in relation to the incident. A fifty year old man by the name of Mark Nicholas is suspected to be connected to the fatal crash. Nicholas is said to be a resident of Brooklyn, New York.
