Following a decorated seven-year stint at Chelsea, Willian decided to trade the blue for the red of Arsenal as he joined on a free transfer prior to the 2020/21 campaign. However, in a recent interview, the Brazilian revealed that he wanted to leave the Emirates after just three months.

Despite signing a three-year deal with the Gunners, Willian ended up having his contract terminated in August as he eventually went back to his homeland to play for Corinthians. The winger sat down with Rio Ferdinand and discussed the whole Arsenal fiasco:

“I wasn’t happy. That’s why I didn’t perform. I don’t want to go into the details,” Willian stated via Ferdinand’s YouTube channel Five.

“When I arrived there I was happy, from the beginning I was motivated, I wanted to do well – new club, new mates, new project.

“But after three months, I said to my agent: ‘Please, I want to go’. I don’t want to speak bad about the club, because it is a big club. Arsenal has a big history.

“In football, big players played there before as well. But it didn’t work, it didn’t work. It was, of course, the most difficult time of my career.

“It was big money that I gave up. But sometimes money is not the most important thing in life. I think you need to be happy, get pleasure every day waking up in the morning to go to train. I wasn’t having that.”

Willian also voiced that he was motivated to stay at Stamford Bridge, but Chelsea was only willing to offer him a two-year extension. He wanted three. During his time at Arsenal, the 33-year-old bagged just one goal in 37 appearances across all competitions.

It was unfortunate that it didn't work out for Willian in North London because he was such a bright talent in a Blues shirt.
