What a difference a few weeks can make, especially in the case of Chicago Bears head coach Matt Nagy.

After being on the coaching hot seat in the last few weeks, it appears that the Bears might retain Nagy for the 2021 season, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

After a 34-30 loss to the Detroit Lions in Week 13 during which they blew a double-digit lead in the last two minutes, there were calls for the firing of Nagy and general manager Ryan Pace as the Bears fell to a 5-7 record after a strong 5-1 start. But since that loss, Chicago has picked up two consecutive wins and moved up to 7-7 with a chance to win a third straight game in Week 16 as they face the 1-13 Jacksonville Jaguars.

A win over the Jaguars would give Nagy three consecutive seasons of at least eight wins since taking over the head coaching position. Chicago finished with a 12-4 record in the 42-year old’s first year then had an 8-8 record last season. It appears that the Bears’ back to back wins over the Houston Texans and Minnesota Vikings would be enough to save Nagy’s job for the season.

The Bears have responded in the last two weeks, with quarterback Mitch Trubisky playing well after being benched earlier in the season. That includes a strong performance in Chicago’s 36-7 win over the Texans, where the 26-year old completed 24 of 33 passes for 267 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions.

It remains to be seen whether the Bears can make the playoffs, with The New York Times giving them a 58% chance to reach the postseason entering Week 16. But it appears that Nagy has done enough to secure his job for at least another season.
