Since becoming a professional team back in 1949, the Atlanta Hawks organization has a regular-season record of 2,766-2,853. The franchise has made the playoffs 46 times and captured one NBA championship.

The Hawks have been home to some of the best players and coaches in franchise history. Despite the organization having just one title to boast, it doesn't take away from all the stellar players and coaches the franchise has employed over the years.

For this piece, we ranked the top four head coaches in Hawks franchise history, starting off with a guy who is currently the coach of the Milwaukee Bucks.

4. Mike Budenholzer

The Hawks won 213 games during the regular season under Budenholzer. He's got the fourth-most wins for a head coach in franchise history.

Budenholzer guided the Hawks to the playoffs four times in the five years he was in Atlanta. He compiled a postseason record of 17-22. Budenholzer's 17 postseason wins are good for fourth in the Hawks' playoff record books.

During the 2014-15 season, the Hawks won 60 games and had the best record in the Eastern Conference. Budenholzer won the Coach of the Year Award but the team wound up losing to LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2015 Eastern Conference Finals.

3. Mike Fratello

Fratello coached the Hawks for eight years and won 324 games. He's second on Atlanta's all-time coaching wins list.

The Hawks made the postseason five times under Fratello and won a grand total of 18 games with “The Czar of the Telestrator” leading the franchise in the playoffs. Fratello's 18 playoff wins are good for second place as well on the Hawks' all-time postseason coaching wins list.

Atlanta won 50 games during the '85-86 season. Fratello was named Coach of the Year.

2. Richie Guerin

Guerin has the most wins for any Hawks coach both in the regular season and postseason. He racked up 327 victories in the regular season and 26 in the playoffs.

Richie coached the Hawks for eight years and the team made the postseason all eight seasons he was at the helm.

Guerin won the 1968 Coach of the Year Award after guiding the Hawks to a record of 56-26.

1. Alex Hannum

Only one Hawks team has ever won it all. It was the 1958 St. Louis squad that defeated the Boston Celtics in six games to capture the 1958 championship.

Hannum was the head coach of the team. He won only 56 games with the franchise but that's because he was the coach for just two seasons. Hannum had an overall record of 56-47 with the Hawks and a playoff mark of 14-7. He holds the best winning percentage for any Hawks coach in the postseason at .667.

In total, that 1957-58 St. Louis team had four Hall of Famers in Bob Pettit, Cliff Hagan, Ed Macauley and Slater Martin. The 1958 Finals saw Pettit and the Hawks taking on Bill Russell and the Celtics. The series went six games, with St. Louis winning in six.

Pettit led the franchise to the title by averaging 29.3 points and 17.0 rebounds. He probably would have won Finals MVP if that award was given back in the day. Hagan was brilliant, too, putting up 25.2 points per game en route to finishing the 1958 playoffs with the most points. He scored 305.

Hawks fans of today are certainly hoping the current front office has the means to improve the roster around All-Star point guard Trae Young. Atlanta had the second-worst record in the Eastern Conference standings before the 2019-20 season was suspended due to COVID-19.
