The Oakland Athletics and San Diego Padres kicked off their three-game series on Monday night, with the Padres winning their fourth consecutive game over the Athletics. The Padres swept the Athletics last season in Oakland. The Athletics have lost six of their past eight games and are quickly falling down the American League West standings. The Padres were beginning to make the National League West a race for a stretch but also lost six of their last eight games before the win over Oakland on Monday. It's time to continue our MLB odds series with an Athletics-Padres prediction and pick.

Why The Athletics Will Cover The Spread/Win
Michael King hasn't gotten very deep into games, as he's still trying to stretch out his arm after five seasons as primarily a starter with the Yankees. King made it just five innings with his inefficiency in his last start, which opens the Athletics up to capitalize on their only advantage against the Padres. The Athletics bullpen has a 3.44 ERA, while the Padres have a 3.72.
The bullpen advantage leading this section doesn't take anything away from Hogan Harris, but his small sample size on the road isn't enough to take the Athletics. Harris has a 1.00 ERA and WHIP in nine innings on the road this season.
Why The Padres Will Cover The Spread/Win
Michael King's form over the last three starts has been lights out. He struggled in the Middle of May in a start at Coors Field, allowing six earned runs in an 8-0 loss to the Rockies. He's slowly been improving, culminating in two earned runs allowed over his last three starts and 17 innings. The Padres could get even more usage out of King if he could get more efficient, as he rarely throws over 100 pitches in an inning.
The Athletics can get all the help they want from their pitching staff, but it won't mean anything if they don't improve their offense. The Athletics are batting just .178 against right-handed pitching over their last ten games, with a .242 on-base percentage and 1.7 runs/nine.
The Padres are averaging one run/nine more over their last ten games against left-handed pitching. The Padres weren't hitting well against lefties to begin the season, which put them at 3.4 runs/nine on the season, but they have 4.5 runs/nine over that span.
Final Athletics-Padres Prediction & Pick
The Athletics offense is a big problem in this matchup, with Michael King allowing just two earned runs over his last three starts. Oakland has an advantage in the pitching matchup in this game, but Harris' small sample size isn't enough to take the hopeless Athletics. Oakland looked like they may make a made-for-TV run in their final season in the Coliseum at the beginning of the season, but have since dropped off. Take Michael King and the Padres to roll in this matchup.
