Why The Blue Jays Will Cover The Spread/Win

The Blue Jays have been inconsistent to start the season towards a 35-42 record. They have lost six straight leading into this series. The team has struggled behind the plate with their bats and then their pitching has also struggled, with both being in the bottom half of the MLB this season. Daulton Varsho, Justin Turner, Bo Bichette, George Springer, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. have stood out behind the plate. Jose Berrios and Yusei Kikuchi have been their best pitchers up to this point in the season. Toronto has talent, but they have not found any consistency up to this point in the season.

The Blue Jays are starting Kevin Gausman on the mound and he has a 5-6 record, a 4.24 ERA, and a 1.29 WHIP. Through 80.1 innings, he has allowed 44 runs on 85 hits with 19 walks, and 79 strikeouts. The Blue Jays are 7-8 in his 15 appearances this season. Gausman has been solid this season for the Blue Jays but has struggled with consistency. He gets a difficult matchup against the Red Sox and their offense behind the plate.

The offense for the Blue Jays has struggled towards a .232 which is 23rd in the league, after finishing last season with a .256 batting average. Daulton Varsho and Vladimir Guerrero Jr lead the team in almost every important batting category. Guerrero Jr. leads the way in batting average at .279, in OBP at .363, and in total hits at 83. Varsho then leads the way in home runs at 11 and RBI at 35. This offense has struggled, but this matchup against Brayan Bello helps because he has been a weaker link in a strong Red Sox pitching staff overall.

Why The Red Sox Will Cover The Spread/Win

The Red Sox have been average for the most part this season, but are playing much better recently. They have a 42-36 record and have won seven of their last eight games and two straight. Statistically, the Red Sox are in the top five of the MLB in pitching and then are in the top 10 behind the plate. Tyler O'Neill, Triston Casas, Jarren Duran, Ceddanne Rafaela, and Rafael Devers are all talented players and have been solid to a varying degree behind the plate so far this season. Regarding their pitching, Tanner Houck, Kutter Crawford, Nick Pivetta, and Garrett Whitlock despite his current injury have made up a great pitching staff.

The Red Sox are starting Brayan Bello on the mound where he has a 7-4 record, a 4.83 ERA, and a 1.41 WHIP. He has allowed 40 runs on 71 hits with 26 walks and 62 strikeouts through 69 total innings this season. The 13 games he has appeared in this year, the Red Sox are 8-5. Bello has been inconsistent on the mound and has been a weaker link for the Red Sox overall. The Blue Jays have struggled behind the plate, so it might not matter much.

The Red Sox's offense has gotten much better and is red-hot currently. They are sixth in team batting average at .254 after finishing last season at .258. The offense is led by Rafael Devers, Ceddanne Rafaela, Tyler O'Neill, and Jarren Duran in most batting categories behind the plate. Duran leads in batting average at .288 and in total hits at 93. Then, O'Neill leads in home runs at 15, Rafaela leads in RBI at 41, and then Devers leads in OBP at .361. The Red Sox and their offense get an interesting matchup against Gausman because he is capable of shutting teams down, but has not been that consistent this season.

Final Blue Jays-Red Sox Prediction & Pick

The Red Sox are one of the hottest teams in the MLB currently, while the Blue Jays are spiraling. However, the Blue Jays have the pitching advantage in this game with Gausman compared to Bello. The Red Sox have a much better offense overall with how much the Blue Jays have struggled and the Red Sox playing very well recently. Expect it to be close for a bit, but the Red Sox should cover and win at home against the Blue Jays.
