Why LSU Could Cover the Spread

The LSU Tigers are not the same 15-0 championship team that we witnessed two seasons ago. They have been an average team since then, with a 4-4 record this year. Now they are set to take on one of the best teams in college football on Saturday night. Luckily for the Tigers, they will be well-rested after having a bye last week. The Tigers offense is averaging 30 points and 393.1 yards per game this year. They pass the ball 55.6% of the time, ranking 17th in the nation. Quarterback Max Johnson has 2,009 passing yards and 20 touchdowns on the season.
Defensively, the Tigers are surrendering 31.9 points and 448.4 yards per game to opponents this season. They gave up 31 unanswered points to the Rebels in their last game before the bye week. This cannot happen against a high-powered Alabama offense, or else the game might be over early. Coach O seems to have the Tigers well prepared following a bye week as the Tigers are 5-0 against the spread in their last five. They are 11-3 against the spread in their last 14 games after an against the spread loss.
Why Alabama Could Cover the Spread
The Alabama Crimson Tide has been as dominant as ever to start their 2021 campaign. They are 1st in the SEC with a 7-1 record. The Crimson Tide offense ranks 2nd overall in points per game (45.6), 8th in yards per game (504.0), and 1st in 3rd down conversion (61.32%). They are also coming off a bye week and will be at home, where they have won every game by an average of 32.6 points this season. The offense is led by quarterback Bryce Young who is a Heisman candidate this year. Young has 2,453 passing yards, 26 touchdowns, and a 70% completion percentage. Wide receivers Jameson Williams and John Metchie III have filled in nicely this year with 600+ receiving yards and five touchdowns each.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Crimson Tide are giving up 21.6 points and 319.1 yards per game to opponents. At home, Alabama is allowing 17.2 points per game which is 4.4 points under their average and two touchdowns less than what LSU averages on the year. In their last 13 conference games, the Crimson Tide are 10-3 against the spread.
Final LSU-Alabama Prediction & Pick
Lay the points with the Crimson Tide in this SEC showdown. Both teams are coming off a bye, so they have had extra time to prepare for one another. The issue is that Alabama is home, and they are winning by a wider margin in Tuscaloosa than the spread indicates. LSU will hang around in this game, but their offense will stall for a few drives, and Alabama will take control and win this matchup by 30+. Alabama is 11-2 against the spread in their previous 13 at home as well.
