Slade Cecconi vs. Randy Vasquez
Slade Cecconi (1-4) with a 5.59 ERA
Last Start: Cecconi did not last very long, going just 4 2/3 innings while allowing one earned run on five hits while striking out four. Ultimately, he did not factor in the decision.
2024 Road Splits: Cecconi has actually been better on the road than at home, as he is 1-2 with a 3.67 ERA. For the most part, he has done his job but has not gotten the run support for a few of the games, including the two losses.
Randy Vasquez (1-3) with a 5.74 ERA
Last Start: Vasquez was adequate in his last start, going five innings while allowing three earned runs on four hits while striking out five. Additionally, it allowed him to get his first win of the season.
2024 Home Splits: Vasquez has been worse at home than on the road. He is 0-2 with a 6.27 ERA. Therefore, keep an eye on his location and what he might do in front of the Padres' faithful.

Why The Diamondbacks Will Cover The Spread/Win
The Diamondbacks have found a way to hit the baseball despite one of their promising superstars struggling. Overall, they are 10th in batting average. Arizona also ranks eighth in on-base percentage and runs. Yet, the Diamondbacks are also 20th in home runs and 12th in slugging percentage.
Corbin Carroll had an amazing rookie season. However, his sophomore season has been awful. Despite his struggles, he did some good against the Padres earlier this season, going 3 for 11 with two RBIs and a run against the Padres. Meanwhile, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. also is struggling. The season has not been kind to him, as he is batting .236 with eight home runs, 35 RBIs, and 28 runs. Furthermore, he went 1 for 7 against the Padres earlier this season.
Christian Walker has been consistent, hitting .260 with 12 home runs, 38 RBIs, and 38 runs. Additionally, he went 3 for 9 with an RBI and two runs against the Padres earlier this season. Ketel Marte has had a solid season, batting .278 with 12 home runs, 32 RBIs, and 40 runs. Furthermore, he went 3 for 10 with a home run, two RBIs, and two runs against the Padres earlier this season.
The Diamondbacks have dealt with injuries to their pitching staff. Because of this, others have had to step up and often struggle. Ceccoi takes the mound, but he has struggled. When he finishes, he will turn the game over to a bullpen that is 21st in the majors.
The Diamondbacks will cover the spread if they can batter the baseball. Then, they need a great outing out of Cecconi, with him getting the most out of his breaking ball.
Why The Padres Will Cover The Spread/Win
The Padres have become one of the most dangerous hitting squads in baseball. Significantly, they are first in the majors in batting average. San Diego also ranks fifth in on-base percentage and ninth in runs. Yet, their power has been inconsistent, as they ranked 18th in home runs and 12th in slugging percentage.
Fernando Tatis Jr. continues to hit consistently, batting .265 with 10 home runs, 31 RBIs, and 40 runs. Amazingly, he went 6 for 15 with an RBI and four runs against the Diamondbacks. Jurrickson Profar is having a career season, hitting .329 with eight home runs, 38 RBIs, and 34 runs. Moreover, he went 4 for 11 with a home run, two RBIs, and three runs against the Diamondbacks earlier this season.
Manny Machado is struggling, batting .251 with six home runs, 32 RBIs, and 27 runs. Yet, he went 4 for 12 with a home run, five RBIs, and three runs against Arizona earlier this season. Luis Arraez is batting .377 with one home run, 12 RBIs, and 15 runs over 27 games with the Padres. Also, he went 5 for 11 against the Diamondbacks with an RBI and a run in the last meeting.
The Padres have regressed as a pitching staff. Yet, they are 16th in the majors and still capable of getting good work out of their pitching staff. Vasquez comes into this game with some mixed results. When Vasquez exits the game, he will turn it over to a bullpen that is 16th in baseball.
The Padres will cover the spread if the offense continues to slug the baseball. Then, they need Vasquez to get his breaking ball working.
Final Diamondbacks-Padres Prediction & Pick
The Diamondbacks and Padres are battling for second place in the division. While the Padres have been better this season, they have also struggled at home recently. Combine that in with the fact that Ceccoi does better on the road and Vasquez struggles at home, and there is a significant chance the Diamondbacks capitalize on that and batter the baseball to give themselves the edge. Diamondbacks cover the spread on the road.
