Why The Diamondbacks Will Cover The Spread/Win
The Diamondbacks have been inconsistent this season on their way to a 29-33 record. They most recently lost a game that broke a four-game winning streak. The Diamondbacks have had a strong season behind the plate and are just outside the top 10. Their pitching has struggled and is one of the worst in the league. Lourdes Gurriel Jr., Ketel Marte, Joc Pederson, Corbin Carroll, Eugenio Suarez, and Christian Walker have been great on offense. Zac Gallen, Brandon Pfaadt, and Merrill Kelly, despite both Gallen and Kelly being injured. The Diamondbacks are a more talented team on paper than the team that won the NL last season, but they have had issues with consistency and injuries.
The Diamondbacks are starting Brandon Pfaadt as pitcher where he has a 2-4 record, a 4.32 ERA, and a 1.08 WHIP. Through 73 innings, Pfaadt has allowed 39 runs on 65 hits with 14 walks and 71 strikeouts. The Diamondbacks are 5-7 in the 12 games he has started in this season. Pfaadt has been solid this season in his second year in the MLB. This is a difficult matchup against the offense for the Padres, which is the best in the league right now.
The offense for the Diamondbacks has been great this season. The Diamondbacks are 12th in the MLB in team batting average at .246 after having .250 last season. Ketel Marte and Christian Walker lead the team in almost every important batting category. Also, at least 13 Diamondbacks have hit one home run up to this point in the season. Marte leads the team in batting average at .276, is tied for the lead in home runs at 12 with Walker, and then in total hits at 67. Walker then leads the way in RBI at 38 and OBP at .352. Michael King has had a solid season, making this an interesting matchup for the Diamondbacks offense.
Why The Padres Will Cover The Spread/Win
The Padres have been decent, but inconsistent in wins and losses at a 32-33 record so far this season. They have also lost four straight heading into this game. The key has been their offense this season where they are the best in the league. In comparison, their pitching is hovering around the middle of the pack of the MLB. Fernando Tatis, Manny Machado, Xander Bogaerts, Jurickson Profar, Jackson Merrill, and Jake Cronenworth have been the biggest keys behind the plate and why the Padres have surprised a bit. Their pitching gained a boost after they added Dylan Cease to a lineup that already had Michael King and Yu Darvish who all have been playing well so far up to this point.
The Padres are starting Michael King as pitcher and he has a 4-4 record, a 3.82 ERA, and a 1.23 WHIP. Through 73 innings, he has allowed 36 runs on 59 hits with 31 walks and 78 strikeouts. He has appeared in 13 total games so far this season and the Padres have gone 8-5 in those games. Michael King has been a solid pitcher for the Padres this season, but this should be a tough matchup against an offense as good as the Diamondbacks.
The Padres' offense has started the season playing great. They are first in team batting average at .258 after finishing with a .244 batting average last season. The offense is highlighted mainly by Jurickson Profar, Jake Cronenworth, and Fernando Tatis Jr. in most of the batting categories. Profar leads the way in batting average at .323, in OBP at .417, and in total hits at 71. Tatis Jr. then leads the way in home runs at 10 and Cronenworth leads in RBI at 39. Their offense can compete with any team in the MLB and this should be an interesting matchup against Pfaadt at pitcher for the Diamondbacks.
Final Diamondbacks-Padres Prediction & Pick
The Diamondbacks are playing better than the Padres right now. They had their win streak broken in their last time out, while the Padres are spiraling a bit. The pitching difference is marginal between King and Pfaadt, but the Padres have the better offense of the two teams. Expect the Padres to cover in this matchup and keep it close, even if the Diamondbacks still win outright.
