The New York Liberty take on the Phoenix Mercury. Our WNBA odds series has our Liberty Mercury prediction, odds, and pick. Find out how to watch Liberty Mercury.

The Phoenix Mercury are one of three WNBA teams at the .500 mark right now. They're unlikely to finish among the top four, which means they will be on the road in the first round of the playoffs, but they are also a few notches above the league's weaker teams, which means they should make the playoffs. Their record says they are a mid-tier team. However, they have notched some top-tier results so far this season. They beat the Las Vegas Aces, Seattle Storm, and Minnesota Lynx. They also very nearly defeated the New York Liberty on the road. They led 74-71 late in regulation before the Liberty rallied to win. New York was a heavy favorite in that game, so the Mercury covered the spread easily and almost won outright.

Phoenix is coming off a strong performance on Sunday in a win over fourth-place Seattle. The Storm are a very good team, but the Mercury took charge in the first quarter and put together one of their better 40-minute performances of the season. This followed a thrilling 103-99 loss to Vegas in one of the most entertaining WNBA games of the year. Phoenix, which played several games without center Brittney Griner this season, looks like a genuinely dangerous team with her on the floor. New York, which is playing the best basketball in the league right now and has won eight games in a row, should feel confident going into Phoenix, but the Liberty should not feel comfortable against a very capable opponent.

Why The Liberty Could Cover The Spread

The Liberty have won eight in a row and currently have an answer to every question an opponent throws at them. They were clearly better than the Las Vegas Aces on Saturday. They got plenty of rest after that game and should be mentally locked in for this contest against a Phoenix team which is tough and resilient but is not hugely consistent, as its .500 recor shows. The Mercury will have games when their defense gets exposed, such as the loss to Vegas last week in which the Aces put 42 points on the board in one quarter (the second quarter). New York can outscore Phoenix and cover the spread in a shootout.

Why The Mercury Could Cover The Spread

The Mercury are a very tough team. They are .500 but have the feel of a team which is going to be a headache to play against in the playoffs. They have the veteran experience of Diana Taurasi and Brittney Griner combined with the emergence of Kahleah Copper. They have players who are not easy to defend. They're a difficult matchup for a lot of teams in the W. They can definitely keep this close, and they might win outright.

Final Liberty-Mercury Prediction & Pick

Phoenix is a very tough team at home. We have seen this in recent games. Crucially, the Mercury play well at home against the toughest teams in the league. They also played New York closely on the road earlier this season. New York is on fire, but we have the sense this game will be uncomfortable for them. Take the Mercury.
