Why The Cardinals Could Cover The Spread
Article Continues BelowThe Cardinals are fighting hard to get into that top spot in the NL Central as they have an overall record now of 50-45, just 1.5 games back from the Brewers. All they need is a little bit more consistency and that first place spot will be theirs. The biggest strength so far for the Cardinals is their offense, ranking eighth in the league for batting average (.251). Their pitching staff has a combined 3.75 ERA, ranking them in the top 10 for the rest of the league. Speaking of pitching, left-hander Steven Matz will be getting the start for the Cards tonight as he'll be making his first appearance back from injury. He is 3-3 on the season with a 6.03 ERA. Can Paul Goldschmidt and the Cardinals get revenge tonight and get to the top of the division?
Why The Reds Could Cover The Spread
The Reds are fully aware that they won't be making the playoffs anytime soon as they have an overall record of 35-57 on the year and sit in dead last in the NL Central, 15.0 games behind the Brewers. They'll be looking to spoil some hopes and dreams for the rest of the season, starting with last night after beating the Cardinals pretty handily. Luckily for them, their offense hasn't been horrific, ranking 19th in the league for batting average (2.39). Their pitching, however, has been dreadful. They rank dead last in the league with a combined 5.30 ERA. Speaking of, Lefty Mike Minor will be getting the start on the bump tonight for the Reds. He hasn't exactly been great so far this season as he's posting a 6.21 ERA through eight starts this season. Can they take down the Cardinals again tonight?
Final Cardinals-Reds Prediction & Pick
The Reds have been a sneaky good team lately. They started off the season at an abysmal pace, losing 22 of their first 25 games, but are just four games under the .500 mark since then in their last 66 games. They won't be seeing the playoffs this year, or likely the next couple of years if they don't figure out a plan soon, but they love to spoil other teams' chances. They got a win last night, but I don't think they get it done again today, I just simply don't trust their pitching enough to bet on them. I don't love the odds that were given here, especially after last night's performance, but give me the Cardinals tonight. They'll look to have a bounce-back kind of game tonight to get back on the right track.
