The San Francisco Giants host the San Diego Padres in game three of the series. It's time to continue our MLB odds series with a Padres-Giants prediction and pick.
The Padres (4-2) didn't like how the game last night ended as they fell 13-2 in game two of the series. Padres ace Yu Darvish allowed nine runs in the first two innings as the cold and windy weather got to him. After not allowing a hit in his first start, Darvish had a complete opposite outing as the Giants knew what was coming. The Padres' bats didn't show up either as they will not try and take game three and win the series this afternoon.
The Giants (3-2) got a much-needed win, but not without the cost of controversy. Mauricio Dubon bunted late in the game when they were up nine. Neither manager liked what they saw, but I'm not sure why. It's 2022 folks, let's stop with the unwritten rules BS. Dubon is a professional athlete trying to earn a living by playing the sport he's paid to play. If he bunts up nine or even hits a grand slam on a 3-0 count up eight, it shouldn't matter. You play the game to win.
Now with all that being said, game three is important for both teams. The Padres are looking to get back on track after Darvish's poor performance, and the Giants are looking to get on a win streak early in the season. This early afternoon game should be a good one.

Why The Padres Could Cover The Spread
Article Continues BelowThe Friars are sending out Sean Manaea for game three of the series. The lefty also did not allow a hit in his first start for the Padres this season. It was also his first start in the new uniform. The former Athletic piggybacked off Darvish as the two starters are the first duo to not allow a hit in the first two games of the season since 1901. Manaea will try and limit the Giants' scorching offense as he is used to pitching in the Bay Area.
If the Padres want to cover this spread the offense needs to wake up. San Diego scored 10 against the Arizona Diamondbacks in game four of that series, which is the highest they scored so far this season. The offense has been minimal in every game other than that, and it's been the pitching that has them (4-2) on the year. Fernando Tatis Jr. will be out until the All-Star break so the rest of the lineup needs to figure out how to win without him. Through six games that seems possible, but it won't be easy against stellar Giants pitching.
The Friars will be facing a right-hander and it will also be the Giants' ace, Logan Webb. Webb pitched phenomenal last season and was a huge reason for their success late last year. San Diego needs to get on the board early or else we could see Webb last 6-7 innings minimum.
Why The Giants Could Cover The Spread
After winning 13-2 last night, it's hard to not want to be on the Giants tonight. They come in as the favorites at home which is the right call. This will be a fantastic pitching matchup and that is a reason for the low over/under, sitting at just seven right now. After the drama from last night, this should be a good game to watch.
As mentioned above, Logan Webb will get his second start of the season. He pitched very well against the Miami Marlins on Opening Day allowing just one run and five hits in six innings. The right-hander throws a sinker most of the time and it is a very tough pitch to hit. The Padres have faced Webb a bunch before and a ton last season, so this won't be a surprise for them. The Giants don't need to rely on their pitching today, but rather on their hitting.
I know they scored 13 runs last night but a majority of that was because Darvish was off his game. If you paid any attention you would have noticed how frustrated he was about not hitting his locations. The Giants lineup also contained six lefties. Manaea is a lefty and so that will make the Giants change their lineup around. Their key to covering this spread is to find a way to get on base as a majority of the starters are left-handed.
Final Padres-Giants Prediction & Pick
I expect this game to be close and I have no idea who will pull through. It's very early in the season so there will be a ton of surprises ahead. This is an elite pitching matchup so I expect the under to hit today.
Final Padres-Giants Prediction & Pick: Under 7 (+100)
