Why The Rockies Could Win This Game

The Rockies will send their best arm to the mound as German Marquez gets his shot at toppling the NL West leaders.

Marquez will make his 24th start of the season, and he currently holds an impressive 3.42 ERA to lead Colorado's rotation.

The hard-throwing righty has been great in the past few months. Over his last 11 starts, Marquez has allowed more than one run in only four appearances. He has also cut down on his walks (only nine over 48 innings) and continued to mow down hitters via the strikeout (47 Ks in the same span).

The key for Marquez will be to give the Rockies length. If he gets drawn into long at-bats, the Giants will have a serious upper hand in the later innings against the Rockies' bullpen. If Marquez can get through six innings with minimal damage, the Rockies could notch a rare road win.

The Rockies' bats get a tough matchup with Logan Webb on the mound for the Giants.

Although Webb has been on fire of late, there's hope for Rockies backers because of Colorado's history against the righty.

Webb has pitched a total of 8 2/3 innings against the Rockies this year and has allowed nine earned runs in the span. In both starts, Webb was unable to pitch past the fifth inning.

Additionally, the Rockies' best hitters have some great history against Webb. Trevor Story and Charlie Blackmon are a combined 9-22 off Webb with six RBIs. If the Rockies can get anything from the rest of their lineup, they could do some damage to Webb before he hands the ball off.

Why The Giants Could Win This Game

At first glance, the Giants might seem at a disadvantage on the mound as they face an All-Star pitcher. But upon closer look, there are several factors that actually make this Marquez-Webb matchup fairly even.

For one, Marquez is oddly better at hitter-friendly Coors Field than he is on the road. Marquez has made 14 home starts and given up more than two earned runs in only four of them.

On the other hand, in nine road starts, the righty has given up two or more earned on five of these occasions. Seven of the 11 home runs Marquez have given up have been away from Coors Field, a great sign for a Giants team that hits the most bombs in the league.

Secondly, Marquez has been atrocious against the Giants this year. In three starts, he has given up 15 earned runs in only 10 1/3 innings pitched. San Francisco has been very good at milking at-bats against Marquez, drawing eight walks to only 13 strikeouts in the three-start span.

Odds are the Giants get to Marquez again and get a crack at one of the worst bullpens in the league for a few innings.

Logan Webb has been pitching the lights out of late, and the Giants have won eight of his last 10 starts. In his six starts in July and August, Webb hasn't allowed more then two earned runs a single time.

In those outings, Webb has held top offensive teams like the Houston Astros and Los Angeles Dodgers to minimum damage. He should have a significantly easier time with this Rockies lineup.

Colorado is batting only .210 on the road, one of the worst batting averages away from home in the entire league. As expected, their OPS and power numbers tank when they leave the thin air of Colorado.

With the pop limited in pitcher-friendly Oracle Park, it's unlikely the Rockies muster much against Webb.

Final Rockies-Giants Prediction & Pick

The Rockies are extremely outgunned at the plate, and the pitching matchup is probably a wash considering Marquez's performances this year on the road and against the Giants. Logan Webb should navigate this lineup with ease, and I expect the Giants to get four or five runs. The Rockies are unlikely to score more than three against a pitcher who has been great of late and a top bullpen in the league. Take the Giants run line as San Francisco should cruise to another easy win.

FINAL ROCKIES-GIANTS PREDICTION & PICK: SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS -1.5 (+105)
