This should be a fun NL West matchup for Friday night! it's time to continue our MLB odds series with a Rockies-Padres prediction and pick.

The Colorado Rockies are (25-32) on the season and are playing a lot better than many projected to start the season. Kris Bryant is currently on the IL, but the lineup has seen some good production over the course of the season. As usual, the rotation struggles as pitching in the Mile High City is never easy. This series will be in San Diego as the Padres are (35-22) on the season. The hitting and pitching have seen success lately as the Padres just took the series from the New York Mets.

Why The Rockies Could Cover The Spread

The Rockies will have Chad Kuhl on the bump for the Rockies tonight. Kuhl is (4-2) on the year with a 3.17 ERA in 54 innings pitched. He's been their top starter this season, so the team will feel better with him on the mound tonight. If he can get at least 5-6 solid innings, then the Rockies will have a chance to cover this spread.

Kris Bryant is out, but the lineup is still playing well as of late. The Rockies just beat the San Francisco Giants in their last series but were swept by the Atlanta Braves in four games in the series prior. C.J. Cron is their top hitter right now as the slugger is batting .285 with 14 home runs and 41 RBIs. Jose Iglesias is batting .305 and a majority of the lineup is batting over .240 and that is something to be positive about.

If the rotation can improve and they don’t have to bring in the bullpen so early in games, then the Rockies will be a tough out. Kuhl is the only starter with an ERA less than 4.00 as two of the starters are over 6.00 in the ERA department.

The Rockies are facing a tough starter tonight so they will have to play well in both aspects of that game. Colorado is (27-30) against the spread this season.

Why The Padres Could Cover The Spread

San Diego native Joe Musgrove will be on the mound tonight. Musgrove has shoved in every single outing this season as he is (6-0) on the year. He will have a chance to be one of three pitchers in the league with a (7-0) record. The other two (Tyler Anderson & Tony Gonsolin), happen to play for their rivals the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Musgrove is dealing this season. His 1.64 ERA is fourth in the majors and second in the NL behind Sandy Alcantara's 1.61 ERA (who might be the NL CY Young favorite at the moment). Musgrove has a WHIP of 0.92 which is 7th in the majors and his 64 strikeouts are in the top-30. In his last outing, the 29-year-old pitched eight shutout innings against the Milwaukee Brewers and took a no-hitter into the eighth inning.

Now for the offense. The lineup is coming off a 13-run game which was the highest of the season. Jake Cronenworth and Luke Voit are starting to get hot as Manny Machado continues his MVP-caliber season. Wil Myers is on the IL as Nomar Mazara and Jurickson Profar seem to now be holding down the corner outfield spots. If Eric Hosmer can get back on track and get back over .300 in average, then this lineup will be deadly when Fernando Tatis Jr. comes back next month.

If the Friars can get to Kuhl early and force an early bullpen game, then the Padres will cover this spread. SD is (32-25) ATS this season BUT only (15-19) as the favorite.

Final Rockies-Padres Prediction & Pick

I assume Musgrove will pitch another gem and so taking the Padres to cover this spread is a good call. He has yet to be really challenged this season but the divisional opponent in the Rockies are used to seeing him … just not this season. Take the Friars at home tonight.

Final Rockies-Padres Prediction & Pick: Padres -1.5 (-120)
