The Washington Nationals take on the Colorado Rockies. Our MLB odds series has our Nationals Rockies prediction and pick. Find out how to watch Nationals Rockies.

The Washington Nationals are under .500, but in the 2024 Major League Baseball season, that isn't a death blow to a team's playoff chances. The Nationals are part of a group of nine teams which is separated by just two games in the standings. None of those nine teams are over .500, but they're all in the mix for a playoff spot because no one can break away from the pack. It's crazy but true. The St. Louis Cardinals are at .500. The San Francisco Giants are four games under .500. Seven other teams are in between in what is going to be a fascinating plot point throughout the remainder of the 2024 season. The Nationals aren't an especially good team, but neither are the eight teams battling them for playoff positioning. It will be quite something to see if Washington — buried in the standings the past few years while the New York Mets and Miami Marlins made the playoffs — can rise to the postseason and play in October this year. Even if the Nats don't compile an especially impressive record, making the playoffs would be one of the more unexpected stories in Major League Baseball in 2024. The Nationals have a good bullpen and some young starting pitchers who are evolving. If their offense can provide just enough help, Washington could be a real factor in the postseason race in August and September. That's not something most baseball observers predicted before this season began. This is a turn of events which has caught a lot of people off guard.

The Colorado Rockies will try to play spoiler against the Nats. The Rox could have and probably should have won their recent three-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, but they allowed seven runs in the top of the ninth, on a grand slam and a three-run homer, to blow a 9-4 lead and lose 11-9. The Colorado bullpen has blown a lot of leads this season, making it hard for this team to get out of its own way.

Why The Nationals Could Cover The Spread

The Nationals have better pitching than the Rockies, especially in the bullpen. When Washington gets a lead in the eighth and ninth innings, the pen generally locks things down. The same cannot be said for Colorado, so if this game is tied in the seventh or eighth inning, the Nationals have the much better chance of scoring two runs and covering the spread and winning the game outright.

Why The Rockies Could Cover The Spread

The Rockies aren't a strong team, but they are competitive. They almost won a three-game series from the Dodgers this week. They are not an easy opponent to play and have shown a lot more resolve in recent weeks after their horrible start to the season in April. They're a much better team now than they were then. That matters in the betting calculus for this game.

Final Nationals-Rockies Prediction & Pick

The world of betting involves some central principles, one being that you don't bet on two bad teams unless you see an enormous difference between them. There's no enormous difference here. Stay away.
