The Colorado Avalanche head into Vegas to take on their new non-divisional rival, the Golden Knights. Both teams are heading into this matchup after playing games last night, both away from T-Mobile Arena in Vegas. The Avalanche are coming off of a 6-3 home win against the Winnipeg Jets last night after being down 3-0 after the first period. The Knights are coming off of a loss in Arizona as the Coyotes won 3-1. Both teams hit the road and will meet again tonight as it’s time to continue our NHL odds series with an Avalanche-Golden Knights prediction and pick.

Why The Avalanche Can Cover The Spread/Win

Article Continues Below

The Avs are 7-2-1 in their last 10 games and have been red hot all season long. They hold the best record in the NHL and leads the league with 80 points. Their depth is insane as they have five players who are scoring over a point per game (Nathan MacKinnon, Gabriel  Landeskog, Mikko Rantanen, Cale Makar, and Nazem Kadri). The Avs are ranked second in goals per game with 3.98, but their power play is exceptional as well, scoring around 23.4 percent of the time. Don't be fooled by their outstanding offense, their defense is also spectacular, ranking in the top 10 with 2.23 goals against per game. However, their penalty kill is having struggles as they only have a 77.3 percent success rate.

Backup goaltender Pavel Francouz got the win last night for the Avs, so fully expect starter Darcy Kuemper to get the starting nod tonight. Kuemper has a save percentage of .919 and allows 2.47 goals per game. He'll look to shut down a streaky Golden Knights team who isn't afraid to throw pucks on the net.

Why The Knights Can Cover The Spread/Win

The Vegas Golden Knights have been dealing with injuries all year and still manage to be one of the better teams in the league. They currently sit in third place in the Pacific Division with 62 points and looking for that top spot soon. The Knights do a good job at driving play though, as they score 3.13 goals per game, ranking them 13th in the league. Defensively, the Knights are ranked 16th in the league with 2.43 goals being allowed per game and an average penalty kill which is operating at a 79.9 percent rate.

Starting goaltender Robin Lehner remains out with a torn labrum, so Laurent Brossoit will most likely be looking to get the starting nod tonight even though he played last night in Arizona, giving up three goals and the loss to the Coyotes. He's averaging a .905 save percentage and allowing 2.66 goals against per game. He will be leaned on heavily in this game against an outstanding Colorado team, but it'll be interesting to see if rookie Logan Thompson steps up in Brossoit's place tonight.

Final Avalanche-Knights Prediction & Pick

Vegas hasn't been playing very well as of late (more than likely due to injuries), and a loss to the Coyotes last night can't be good for the team's morale. On the other hand, the Avalanche are coming off of a huge come from behind victory last night as momentum is back on their side, as it has been all season. If Logan Thompson is in the net for the Knights, this game could get out of hand very quickly. No matter who is starting between the pipes for Vegas, I think the Avs come out and handle business on the road. Give me the Avalanche puck-line while the odds are still relatively decent.

Final Avalanche-Knights Prediction and Pick: Avalanche -1.5 (+148)
