Why The Rockies Will Cover The Spread/Win

The Rockies are one of the worst teams in the MLB this season. They are 27-51 this season and have lost three out of their last four games. Their bats have been excellent this season, and rank just outside the top 10, but they have the worst pitching staff in the MLB by a wide margin. Brendan Rodgers, Ryan McMahon, Ezequiel Tovar, Brenton Doyle, and Elias Diaz have all been solid for the Rockies behind the plate. Cal Quantrill and Austin Gomber have been okay at best for a unit that has struggled this season. The Rockies' offense has improved, but their pitching has been terrible and is the main reason why they have struggled so much this year.

The Rockies are starting Austin Gomber on the mound. He has a 1-4 record, a 4.36 ERA, and a 1.30 WHIP. He has allowed 38 runs on 75 hits with 24 walks and 52 strikeouts through 76.1 innings. The Rockies are only 5-9 in the 14 starts this season. Gomber has been a bright spot for the Rockies but has struggled with consistency on the mound. This is a tough matchup for him against the Astros because of all their talent behind the plate and they are also the best batting average in the MLB currently.

The Rockies' offense has been a bright spot, especially recently. They are 10th in team batting average at .250 after finishing last season with the same average. The offense is led by Ryan McMahon and Ezequiel Tovar. McMahon leads the way in home runs at 14, in RBI at 42, and in OBP at .356. Then, Tovar leads the way in batting average at .285 and total hits at 91. They get a favorable matchup against Hunter Brown, who has been one of the weak links in a struggling Astros pitching staff. This favors the Rockies, even with Brown playing better in his last time out.

Why The Astros Will Cover The Spread/Win

The Astros have opened this season struggling with consistency. They have a 38-40 record currently and have been red-hot, winning five straight. Despite their struggles, their offense has been great this season with the second-best batting average in the MLB. Jose Altuve, Kyle Tucker, Jeremy Pena, Yainer Diaz, and Yordan Alvarez have been great for Houston behind the plate. The issue is all on the mound where they have struggled. Ronel Blanco, Framber Valdez, and Justin Verlander have stood out on a struggling staff. The Astros have talent, but they need to put it together.

The Astros are starting Hunter Brown on the mound. He has a 4-5 record, a 4.72 ERA, and a 1.41 WHIP. Brown has allowed 40 runs on 76 hits with 29 walks and 82 strikeouts through 74.1 innings up to this point in the season. In his 15 appearances for Houston this season, the Astros are 5-10. Brown has struggled this season, but he gets a difficult matchup against the Rockies and their offense. He has played better recently, so that works in his favor, but the Rockies have played great behind the plate all season.

The offense for the Astros has been the best in the MLB this season. They are first in batting average at .262 after they finished last season at .259. Jose Altuve, Kyle Tucker, and Yordan Alvarez lead the Astros in almost every important batting category. Altuve leads in .299 batting average and total hits at 95. Tucker leads in home runs at 19 and in OBP at .395. Finally, Alvarez leads in RBI at 41. The Astros have been great on offense, and they are red-hot right now behind the plate. They get a decent matchup against Austin Gomber on the mound, who has been okay at best, but has struggled with consistency.

Final Rockies-Astros Prediction & Pick

The Rockies have struggled all year and the Astros are red-hot. Neither pitcher has a huge advantage, but Gomber is slightly better than Brown this season. The difference is the Astros offense being the best in the league. The Astros should win and cover at home and extend their winning streak to six in a row.
