The Chicago Sky are making headlines for the wrong reasons. They are not winning games. They lost to the Indiana Fever and New York Liberty in their last two contests, both of which were marred by controversies relating to WNBA game officiating problems. WNBA officiating is widely regarded as being substandard. The Sky were much too aggressive with Caitlin Clark and the Fever last Saturday but weren't sufficiently penalized. What was called a common foul on a rough and excessive play against Clark should have been a technical and/or flagrant foul. After multiple days in which that officiating failure was discussed in the news cycle, WNBA referees clearly became a lot more authoritative and proactive in their next few games. However, they didn't seem to make the right calls. Chicago's Angel Reese was ejected for what seemed like a very tame and unremarkable response to a call. The WNBA was worried about consistency, but the real problem is simply that officials aren't using good judgment which is appropriate for each situation. The Sky, being caught in the middle of these officiating controversies, have to wonder what will happen next. This is a distracted, uncertain team heading into Thursday night's game against the Mystics.

Washington is still winless in the WNBA this season. The Mystics really miss Elena Delle Donne, who said before the season that she wouldn't play this year. Washington doesn't have the elite player defenses have to adjust to, the kind of player who can completely change the dynamic on the court. Washington's offense is a huge liability; the Mystics have to find a way to score more regularly if they want to get into the win column.

Why The Sky Could Cover The Spread

The Sky should win just because Washington is worse. We can all see how feeble and limited the Mystics' offense is without Elena Delle Donne. Washington's unceasing series of losses makes it really hard to trust the Mystics from a betting perspective, even though the Mystics have covered a few spreads this season. When the Mystics have covered the spread, it has usually been more a product of the struggles of Washington's opponent, rather than the Mystics figuring out how to play well. Whenever Washington does play well — which is not often — the Mystics aren't able to sustain that high level of play for more than a half or maybe three quarters maximum. Washington's margins are too small. Chicago is a better team if only because Washington is the worst in the WNBA. Sometimes, you bet on the favorite. Other times, you bet against the underdog. This bet is the latter.

Why The Mystics Could Cover The Spread

The Chicago Sky can't score consistently. They have promising rookies who might blossom into stars, but right now, this team is searching for a better formula at the offensive end of the floor. Chicago lost to the Indiana Fever, one of the three worst teams in the league alongside the Mystics and the Los Angeles Sparks. The Sky aren't earning any trust from a betting standpoint right now.

Final Sky-Mystics Prediction & Pick

The wisdom of betting contains a lot of different truths. One is that you don't bet on two below-average teams unless the gap between them is enormous. Chicago is better, but the gap is not that big. Stay away from this game.

Final Sky-Mystics Prediction & Pick: Sky -4
