Why The Twins Will Cover The Spread/Win

The Twins are 43-35 and have won two straight leading into this matchup. The Twins are just outside the top 10 in batting and are struggling with their pitching staff. Alex Kirilloff, Edouard Julien, Byron Buxton, Willi Castro, Carlos Santana, and Ryan Jeffers are some notable names on this Minnesota offense despite the struggles. On the mound, Joe Ryan and Simeon Woods Richardson are the names to watch despite the struggles they have dealt with there as a staff.

The Twins are starting Simeon Woods Richardson on the mound where he has a 2-1 record, a 3.26 ERA, and a 1.14 WHIP. He has allowed 23 runs on 52 hits with 17 walks and 52 strikeouts through 60.2 innings. The Twins are 8-4 in the 12 games that he's started so far this season. Woods Richardson has been great on the mound for the Twins. However, this is a difficult matchup because the Diamondbacks have been great on offense.

The offense for the Twins has been around the middle of the pack this season. They have jumped all over the place in the rankings and are currently 12th in the MLB in team batting average at .247 after finishing with a .243 average last year. Willi Castro, Carlos Santana, and Carlos Correa lead the Twins in most batting categories. Correa leads in batting average at .304 and in OBP at .368. Santana is tied for the lead in home runs at 12 with Ryan Jeffers and then leads in RBI at 38. Finally, Castro leads in total hits at 73. They get a favorable matchup against Ryne Nelson who has struggled and been inconsistent on the mound for the Diamondbacks.

Why The Diamondbacks Will Cover The Spread/Win

The Diamondbacks have been inconsistent this season and ravaged by injuries on their way to a 38-40 record. They have two straight leading into this series. The Diamondbacks have had a strong season behind the plate and are in the top 10. Their pitching has struggled and is one of the worst in the league due to injuries. Lourdes Gurriel Jr., Ketel Marte, Joc Pederson, Corbin Carroll, Eugenio Suarez, and Christian Walker have been great on offense. Zac Gallen, Brandon Pfaadt, and Merrill Kelly, despite both Gallen and Kelly being injured. The Diamondbacks have been decimated by injuries and need to get healthy, especially on the mound.

The Diamondbacks are starting Ryne Nelson on the mound where he has a 5-5 record, a 5.18 ERA, and a 1.51 WHIP. Through 64.1 innings, Nelson has allowed 39 runs on 79 hits with 18 walks and 43 strikeouts. The Diamondbacks are 6-7 in the 13 games he has started this season. Nelson has been very inconsistent and has struggled on the mound despite all the injuries the pitching staff has dealt with. He has a difficult matchup against the Twins and their offense which has been playing much better recently.

The offense for the Diamondbacks has been great this season. The Diamondbacks are eighth in the MLB in team batting average at .251 after having a .250 one season ago. Ketel Marte and Christian Walker lead the team in almost every important batting category. Marte leads in batting average at .277, in OBP at .338, and in total hits at 82. Walker then leads in home runs at 17 and RBI at 50. This offense has been great, but they get a big challenge against Woods Richardson on the mound for the Twins.

Final Twins-Diamondbacks Prediction & Pick

The Twins are the better team in this game, but the Diamondbacks have been playing well recently. The Diamondbacks have the better offense when compared to the Twins behind the plate. Woods Richardson is better on the mound when compared to Nelson. Still, this game should be close and the Diamondbacks should cover at home, even if the Twins still win.
