Why The White Sox Will Cover The Spread/Win
The White Sox are the worst team in the MLB currently. They have a 17-52 record so far this season, and they have lost four straight games leading into this series. They are the worst team in the MLB behind the plate and are also struggling on the mound, ranking second to last, and are only in front of the Rockies. Gavin Sheets, Paul DeJong, Andrew Vaughn, and Andrew Benintendi are standouts despite how bad the offense has been. The only notable pitchers in the lineup are Erick Fedde and Garrett Crochet.
The White Sox are starting Chris Flexen on the mound in this matchup and he has a 2-5 record, a 5.06 ERA, and a 1.30 WHIP. He has allowed 36 runs on 59 hits with 24 walks and 49 strikeouts. In his 14 appearances this season, the White Sox are 2-12. Flexen has struggled for the White Sox and this is a terrible matchup against an offense as good as the Diamondbacks have been on the season.
The offense for the White Sox has been awful. The White Sox are dead last in the MLB in team batting average at .219 which comes after having a .238 last season. Gavin Sheets, Paul DeJong, and Andrew Vaughn lead the offense in most categories. Sheets leads the way in batting average at .241 and OBP at .346. Then, DeJong leads the way in home runs at 13 and RBI at 28. Finally, Vaughn leads the way in total hits at 53. The White Sox offense will struggle in this game against Castillo and how good he has been on the mound.
Why The Diamondbacks Will Cover The Spread/Win
The Diamondbacks have been inconsistent this season and have been dealing with injuries on their way to a 32-36 record. They most recently lost a game that broke a two-game winning streak. The Diamondbacks have had a strong season behind the plate and are in the top 10. Their pitching has struggled and is one of the worst in the league. Lourdes Gurriel Jr., Ketel Marte, Joc Pederson, Corbin Carroll, Eugenio Suarez, and Christian Walker have been great on offense. Zac Gallen, Brandon Pfaadt, and Merrill Kelly, despite both Gallen and Kelly being injured. The Diamondbacks have been decimated with injuries and have struggled more than many thought coming into the year.
The Diamondbacks are starting Ryne Nelson on the mound where he has a 3-5 record, a 5.96 ERA, and a 1.69 WHIP. Through 51.1 innings, Nelson has allowed 36 runs on 70 hits with 17 walks and 33 strikeouts. The Diamondbacks are 4-7 in the 11 games he has appeared in this season. Nelson has struggled on the mound, but the White Sox offense offers a favorable matchup for him to rebound potentially.
The offense for the Diamondbacks has been great this season. The Diamondbacks are 10th in the MLB in team batting average at .249 after having a .250 one season ago. Ketel Marte and Christian Walker lead the team in almost every important batting category. Also, at least 13 Diamondbacks have hit one home run up to this point in the season. Marte leads the team in batting average at .282, leads in home runs at 14, in OBP at .348, and in total hits at 74. Walker then leads the way in RBI at 42. This offense has been great, and they get a good matchup against Flexen for the White Sox.
Final White Sox-Diamondbacks Prediction & Pick
The White Sox have done nothing but struggle this season. The Diamondbacks have been inconsistent and decimated by injuries. The pitching matchup will be tough with Flexen and Nelson having struggles this year on the mound. The difference is the offense for the Diamondbacks and that is why they should win and cover at home. They have the talent and the White Sox don't.
