Why The White Sox Will Cover The Spread/Win

The White Sox are the worst team in the MLB currently. They have a 17-51 record so far this season, and they have lost three straight games leading into this game, including the two straight in this series. They are the worst team in the MLB behind the plate and are also struggling on the mound, ranking second to last, and are only in front of the Rockies. Gavin Sheets, Paul DeJong, Andrew Vaughn, and Andrew Benintendi are standouts despite how bad the offense has been. The only notable pitchers in the lineup are Erick Fedde and Garrett Crochet.

The White Sox are starting Garrett Crochet as a pitcher in this matchup and he has a 6-5 record, a 3.33 ERA, and a 0.93 WHIP. He has allowed 29 runs on 53 hits with 17 walks and 103 strikeouts. In his 14 appearances this season, the White Sox are 6-8. Crochet has genuinely been a bright spot for a team that has struggled so much on the mound across the board. He gets a favorable matchup against the Mariners because they have struggled so much behind the plate this season.

The offense for the White Sox has been awful. The White Sox are dead last in the MLB in team batting average at .219 which comes after having a .238 last season. Gavin Sheets, Paul DeJong, and Andrew Vaughn lead the offense in most categories. Sheets leads the way in batting average at .241 and OBP at .346. Then, DeJong leads the way in home runs at 13 and RBI at 28. Finally, Vaughn leads the way in total hits at 53. The White Sox offense will struggle in this game against Castillo and how good he has been on the mound.

Why The Mariners Will Cover The Spread/Win

The Mariners have been playing well recently and have a 39-30 record. They have won three straight games leading into this game. The Mariners have struggled behind the plate this season, but their pitching staff is a top-10 unit in the MLB. Julio Rodriguez, Cal Raleigh, Mitch Haniger, Jorge Polanco, Ty France, and Mitch Garver are standouts on offense despite their struggles. Luis Castillo, Logan Gilbert, and Bryce Miller have all been at varying levels of good to great for the Mariners pitching-wise and have carried the team when needed.

The Mariners are starting Luis Castillo at pitcher where he has a 5-7 record, a 3.35 ERA, and a 1.16 WHIP. Through 83.1 innings, he has allowed 33 runs on 74 hits with 23 walks and 85 strikeouts. In his 14 starts this season, the Mariners have a 7-7 record. He also has a K/BB ratio of 3.7 this season. Castillo has been excellent for the Mariners and a key piece of why their pitching staff has been great as a unit. This is a favorable matchup against a White Sox offense that has really struggled this season.

The Mariners have talent, but they have struggled across the board this season behind the plate. They are 28th in batting average at .223 after finishing last season at .242. Julio Rodriguez, Cal Raleigh, and Ty France lead the Mariners in most batting categories. Rodriguez leads the way in batting average at .271 and total hits at 74. Raleigh then leads in home runs at 12 and in RBI at 42. Ty France then leads in OBP at .329. This matchup against Crochet will be difficult because he has been having a very good year on the mound so far as a bright spot for all the struggles of the White Sox.

Final White Sox-Mariners Prediction & Pick

The White Sox have been awful this year, but with Crochet starting they should keep this game close. Castillo has been solid for the Mariners in comparison. Neither offense has been anything special and both have struggled all year. With this being a pitching duel, expect the White Sox to cover and potentially win on the road in Seattle thanks in large part because of Crochet on the mound.
