The Buffalo Bills will not exercise their fifth-year option on defensive lineman Shaq Lawson, according to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network. This will make Lawson a free agent next offseason.

Lawson is coming off of a 2018 campaign in which he played 14 games and finished with 30 tackles, four sacks, a couple of forced fumbles, and five passes defended.

The 24-year-old, who played his collegiate football at Clemson University, was originally selected by the Bills in the first round (19th pick overall) of the 2016 NFL Draft.

There were high hopes for Lawson coming out of college, but he has actually been a pretty big disappointment.

He appeared in just 10 contests during his rookie year as a result of undergoing shoulder surgery shortly after being drafted. In the time he was on the field, Lawson totaled just 13 tackles, a pair of sacks, and a forced fumble in a reserve role.

The following year, Lawson was limited to just 11 games as a result of suffering an ankle injury during the second half of the year that ultimately landed him on the injured reserve list. He ended up posting 33 tackles, four sacks, and a forced fumble.

Buffalo won just six games this past season, one year after making it to the playoffs for the first time since the 1999-00 campaign, which ended the longest active postseason drought in the NFL at the time.

Since 2000, the Bills have posted just three winning seasons, and they have not recorded double-digit victories during that span. Buffalo has not won a playoff game since the 1995-96 campaign.
