Heading into the first week of the regular season, there is still plenty questions around the quarterback situation for the Buffalo Bills.

Starter Tyrod Taylor is still in concussion protocol despite returning to practice on Monday. On top of that, third-string quarterback T.J. Yates is also in concussion protocol, which could lead the team to go with Nathan Peterman under center in the season opener against the New York Jets, according to The Associated Press.

Taylor's presence on the field was an encouraging sign for a team depleted at quarterback. Third-stringer T.J. Yates in concussion protocol after he was also hurt against Baltimore. Yates also took part in practice on Monday.

The uncertain status of Taylor and Yates left the Bills potentially turning to rookie Nathan Peterman.

Both Taylor and Yates suffered concussions against the Baltimore Ravens on August 26th in preseason play. In response to that situation, the Bills have signed Joe Webb as an insurance policy, but head coach Sean McDermott has expressed confidence that Peterman can handle the starting job if needed.

“He is ready,” McDermott said. “When you look at what he's done throughout the preseason, I'm confident, and we're extremely confident in Nathan. I expect that he's only going to continue to get better.”

Peterman was selected in the fifth round of this year's draft and has quickly jumped up the depth chart to the backup role behind Taylor. He held up his own in the preseason, completing 43 of 79 passes (54.4 percent) for 457 yards and a touchdown.

The 23-year-old was initially drafted as a development project with the potential to become the starter down the line for the Bills if the team decided to go in another direction with Taylor.
