The upcoming Michelle Yeoh-led Prime Video series, Blade Runner 2099, has gotten huge updates. Including one that includes one of the driving forces of FX's Shōgun.

Collider reported the new developments on the series. It will reportedly commence filming in June 2024 and continue through December 2024. Two of the confirmed locations include Prague and Spain. This comes nearly two years after its original planned start date.

Ridley Scott, who directed the original Blade Runner film in 1982, will return as a producer of the series. Michael Green, who co-wrote Blade Runner 2049, is also returning as an executive producer. This should help as the series takes place a half-century after the events of the film he wrote.

Silka Luisa (Halo) is the showrunner of the series. And While a full list of directors is being kept under wraps, Jonathan van Tulleken will direct the Blade Runner 2099's “first episodes.”

He is coming off of directing the first two episodes of Shōgun. The FX Shōgun series was a huge hit during its run. Allegedly, Jeremy Podeswa (Game of Thrones) was supposed to direct the premiere before dropping out. Van Tulleken is a capable replacement.

Blade Runner 2099 is the latest project in the universe. It's set 50 years after the events of Denis Villeneuve's 2049 film. Plot details are being kept under wraps but Yeoh is confirmed as the star.

She also starred in American Born Chinese with Everything Everywhere All at Once co-star Ke Huy Quan for Disney+. Coming up, she will star in Wicked coming up as Madame Morrible.

Early in her career, Yeoh gained notoriety for roles in Police Story 3: Supercop, Tomorrow Never Dies, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. She also starred in Memories of a Geisha, Sunshine, and Kung Fu Panda 2.

In recent years, Yeoh starred in rom-coms including Crazy Rich Asians and Last Christmas. She then made her way to the MCU, starring in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Yeoh has also starred in the Star Trek universe, leading Discovery from 2017-20.

The Blade Runner franchise

The Blade Runner franchise began in 1982 with Ridley Scott's film. It was an adaptation of Philip K. Dick's 1968 novel, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

Harrison Ford starred in the film as a cop, Rick Deckard, in a dystopian Los Angeles in 2019. Rutger Hauer, Sean Young, and Edward James Olmos also starred in the film.

It was not a big box office hit. Scott's film wouldn't get a sequel until 2017 when Denis Villeneuve tried his hand at the material. Ryan Gosling led the film with Ford returning in a smaller role. Ana de Armas, Robin Wright, Mackenzie Davis, Sylvia Hoeks, Dave Bautista, and Jared Leto also starred in the film. Similar to its predecessor, 2049 wasn't a huge box office hit.

While the Blade Runner franchise hasn't returned to the big screen, an animated series, Black Lotus, was released in 2021. Blade Runner 2099 will attempt to bring the franchise back to its live-action roots.
