Two floaters by the two best players the Portland Trail Blazers had to offer and a bank of lights going out at the venue was all it took for Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum to come away with a 115-113 overtime win against the Denver Nuggets.

The Nuggets led 90-85 in the fourth quarter when a bank of lights went out near the ceiling of the Pepsi Center. The teams shot jumpers to keep warm until the game got started once again.

After Denver carved up a nine-point lead with 6:07 to go in the game, Lillard and McCollum scored baskets one after another to bring the Blazers within two.

Wilson Chandler missed two free-throws down the stretch, giving Portland the ball with 2.9 seconds to go. After a timeout and a designed play by coach Terry Stotts, center Mason Plumlee threw an out of bounds lob to Lillard, who was coming off a curl set — catching the pass airborne and forcing overtime with a left-handed alley-oop finish.

In the overtime period, the two teams traded baskets until McCollum hit a clutch floater in traffic to tie the game at 113. An Al-Farouq Aminu block in the next possession gave the Blazers the ball, and without the need to call a timeout, it was left in the hands of their star player.

With five seconds left on the clock, Lillard sized up Kenneth Faried, drove hard left and took a right-handed floater to put Portland up two with 0.3 seconds left in the game.

The Blazers' backcourt put on a show, as Lillard finished with 37 points, five rebounds, seven assists, and three steals, while McCollum put up 23 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, three steals, and three blocks — showcasing an excellent performance on the defensive end.

Portland overcame a well-rounded Nuggets team that had six players in double figures, led by Nikola Jokic who had 23 points, 17 rebounds, and four steals.

Lillard has been slowly building his case for an MVP season, putting up the numbers and the wins to go with it.

“It was a gut check game,” Lillard told Brooke Olzendam of Blazers.com.

“We would have lost this game last year,” he told Blazers beat reporter Casey Holdahl.
