Former Portland Trail Blazers star Brandon Roy wants Carmelo Anthony to wear No. 7 in the upcoming season.

The No. 7 jersey hasn’t been issued by the Blazers since 2011, the year Roy last wore it. Anthony, who wore No. 00 with the Blazers last season, told reporters on media day he wants to wear No. 7, which is the number he wore with the New York Knicks and Oklahoma City Thunder.

In an interview with Jason Quick of The Athletic, Roy gave Anthony his blessing to don No. 7. The former Blazers guard also spoke about how Anthony did a favor for him and his cousin back in 2009.

“I would be honored if he wore it,” Roy said. “So we should (let him have it). I asked Melo if my cousin, who was sick from cancer, could shake his hand and take a picture with him. He said, ‘Of course.' Made her night. He was her favorite player.”

Brandon Roy appeared in 295 games with the Blazers. He averaged 19.0 points, 4.3 rebounds and 4.7 assists per game and was the 2007 Rookie of the Year.

A three-time All-Star, Roy was on his way to becoming an all-time great before his career with the Blazers ended due to degenerative knees. Portland has no plans to retire the No. 7 despite Roy's contributions to the team, per Quick.
