John Elway and the Denver Broncos were one of the best teams in the NFL just a few short years ago. Now, they are fighting to remain relevant in the AFC. Denver has gotten off to a 2-4 start this season, although they looked a lot better in Week 6 against the undefeated Los Angeles Rams, losing by a final score of 23-20.

Looking ahead at the remainder of the season, Elway wants the defense to step up. In an interview shared by  Nicki Jhabvala of The Athletic, Elway talked about his thoughts on the way the defense has played so far this season.

“You know that’s a good question. Obviously we’ve gotten very soft in there and to give up the amount of yardage we have in the last two weeks has been tough. We’re not playing well inside and obviously we’ve played some good teams. The Rams are a good rushing team, Gurley is a very, very good back. But that is a big, big concern right now and we have to figure out how to get that solved.”

Denver used to have one of the most feared defenses in the NFL. Since then, they have lost quite a few of the stars that made them so dangerous. Von Miller is still in town, but he needs help.

Through the first six weeks of the 2018 NFL season, the Broncos are currently ranked as the No. 28 overall defense. Against the pass, they are ranked No. 14. On the other hand, the Broncos rank dead last in the league.

If the Broncos want to get back into contention this season, they have to toughen up and make plays.

Elway may start thinking about major changes next offseason if the defense continues to struggle. He is always looking for ways to compete and the current roster simply isn't getting the job done.

The Broncos will have another chance to prove that their defense can get back on track on Thursday night. They will hit the road for a matchup with the Arizona Cardinals and rookie quarterback Josh Rosen.
