Phillip Lindsay has held a starting job with the Denver Broncos since 2018, but that could be subject to change with Melvin Gordon joining the team in 2020. After two weeks since free agency began, Lindsay reacted to Denver signing Gordon.

“Melvin’s not my enemy,’’ Lindsay said via Mike Klis of KUSA. “He’s my teammate. He needs to do his job but best believe I’m going to do my job.’’

During the first week of free agency, the Broncos signed Gordon to a two-year, $16 million contract. Considering that Denver made Gordon the fourth highest-paid running back in the NFL, he figures to have a decent-sized role next season.

At the same time, Lindsay has performed well as the starting running back for the Broncos over the past two seasons. In his first two seasons in the NFL, Lindsay has combined for 2,048 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns.

As a matter of fact, Lindsay has done something that Gordon hasn't — rush for 1,000 yards in two seasons. Lindsay, who has exceeded expectations as an undrafted free agent out of Colorado, is entering the final year of his contract. While he isn't upset at Gordon, Lindsay also realizes he needs to take care of himself.

“I feel like I’ve outplayed my contract and I deserve to take care of my family, too,’’ Lindsay said. “But I’m under contract still. For me, my mindset is to play out my contract. The fact is, nothing has to be done. You can’t make anybody do something they don’t want to do.

Besides Gordon and Lindsay, the Broncos also have Royce Freeman in their crowded backfield. Regardless of how Denver chooses to feature them in the offense, Lindsay is prepared to work relentlessly to keep his job.
