Denver Broncos quarterback Drew Lock returned to practice this week after spending time on injured reserve with a right thumb injury.

Having a rookie miss that much time is usually not a good thing, but Broncos coach Vic Fangio thinks it's was a good thing.

Fangio has watched Lock for a couple of days in practice and thinks the time away helped him understand the game more.

During OTAs and training camp, Fangio thinks everything was piling up and things were progressing too quickly. With the time off Lock has been able to take a step back and the game has slowed down for him.

“I think the time off in some ways, although you never want it, helped him,” Fangio said, via the Denver Post. “I think he learned a lot whereas, when he was going through it in the spring and training camp before he got hurt, it was piling up on him I think. Besides learning the new offense and being under center, which he had never done in college — all those things were piling up on him and getting in the way of progressing the way you’d like to see him progress. I think, through his time off, he’s been able to solve some of those issues emotionally and mentally.”

The next question for Lock and the Broncos is how long before he gets into a game. Brandon Allen is starting on Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings but it feels he is only a place holder until Lock is ready for game action.
