It is no secret that the New England Patriots are in the market for another potential wideout. As a result, rumors have surfaced about them looking to acquire Denver Broncos wide receiver Demaryius Thomas.
However, that does not appear to be the case. According to Mike Klis of 9News, there has not been much substance behind the rumor:
“I heard about the speculation of Demaryius Thomas and New England and ran it by some folks. I was told there’s nothing to it,” Klis wrote.
Although the Patriots may not be inquiring about Thomas, Klis did not rule out the possibility of Denver parting ways with him.
“There may be nothing to this whatsoever, but I’ve detected a weird sense coming out of Denver,” he said. “We’ve seen Elway do this where he’ll squeeze a guy very very late.”
General manager John Elway has ushered in a bit of a youth movement over the last couple of years. This has seen the Broncos part ways with a number of key veterans in the process. Thomas could be added to that list given his recent struggles on and off the field. Furthermore, the emergence of their other young wideouts such as Courtland Sutton has given them a reason to believe there are viable backup options.
That said, the notion of him playing anywhere else but Denver this season is still a bit far-fetched. The Broncos finally managed to add a bonafide starter under center in quarterback Case Keenum. They will need to surround him with as many weapons as possible if he is going to lead them back to the playoffs. Thomas and wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders have long been one of the most talented duos in the league. They are excited about the opportunity to build on their legacy with Keenum in town.
