Diontae Spencer gave the Denver Broncos an early lead over the Carolina Panthers with an electric punt return touchdown.

Spencer, a wide receiver, ran Joseph Charlton's punt back 83-yards to the house with just over 10 minutes remaining in the first quarter. Denver kicker Brandon McManus missed the extra point, resulting in a 6-0 Broncos lead.

Rather than calling a fair catch on Charlton's high-arcing kick, Spencer narrowly avoided the tackle from Carolina's gunner, then faked out a second Panther (and his own blocker) as he cut back and found a hole on the left side of the field. Spencer immediately showed off his 4.27 speed, bursting upfield and outrunning the rest of the Panthers punt team on the way to the end zone.

The score marked the first touchdown of Spencer's young career. In his two seasons returning punts for the Broncos entering Week 14, the speedster had returned 35 punts at an average of 10.2 yards per run back.

Spencer was activated from the team's reserve/COVID-19 list on Thursday, in time for him to be eligible to face Carolina. Obviously, the Broncos have already greatly benefited from his presence. He had been placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list on Nov. 27.

The Broncos (4-8) entered Sunday on a two-game losing streak, though the defeats have come against the New Orleans Saints with Kendall Hinton starting at QB, and in a fairly competitive matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Carolina, off a bye, last played in Week 12 — a 28-27 loss to the Minnesota Vikings.
