Brown hire CFL head coach Chris Jones
The Cleveland Browns continue to fill positions in their coaching staff, as another one is coming their way – this time from the north of the border in the form of CFL head coach and general manager Chris Jones.
According to TSN football outsider David Williams Naylor, Jones has agreed to be part of the Browns’ coaching staff.
Can confirm that @sskroughriders head coach and GM Chris Jones is leaving the CFL to take a job with the Cleveland Browns. #CFL
Although Naylor did not specify what role Jones would have in Cleveland, an earlier report by CFL News, which was retweeted by Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, noted that Jones’ job would be one that concerns the team’s defense.
Sources say #Riders Head Coach Chris Jones has interviewed today with the Cleveland Browns & they are hiring him in a defensive capacity. Details to come. Jones had an NFL out clause in his #CFL contract. Expect Jeremy O’Day to take over as GM.
In any case, it seems that Jones will be working together with Steve Wilks, who is also a recent hire by Cleveland. After just one season as head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, Wilks was fired, paving the way for the Browns to employ and install him as their new defensive coordinator.
The hiring of Chris Jones comes as a surprise, particularly within the CFL circle, as he just signed an extension deal with the Saskatchewan Roughriders last week after helping the team improve from a 5-13 season in 2016 to a 10-8 one in 2017. In his last season with the Roughriders, Jones was able to steer the team into a 12-6 finish, while also garnering a CFL Coach of the Year honors.
