Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield made quite the first impression on his NFL debut. With starter Tyrod Taylor ruled out with a concussion, the No. 1 overall pick in this year’s draft got his chance to play, and he didn’t disappoint as he led the Browns to a rousing comeback win over the Jets.

After the game, Mayfield admits that he just stayed patient while waiting for his moment behind Taylor, and it eventually came.

“I feel like people have been talking about it for a while,” Mayfield said per Mary Kay Cabot of cleveland.com. “I've just been waiting for my moment. I've been patient. I've been in a good opportunity, put in a good situation with the guys around me – veteran QBs and great coaches that I can learn from. I was never whining or complaining about playing time. I just want the team to win, no matter what the cost is.”

Mayfield finished his debut going 17-of-23 for 201 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions for a 100.1 rating. Despite his lack of first-team reps during camp, he looked calm and in control, especially in the clutch. His composure was all the more evident in comparison to his draft mate, Sam Darnold, who looked disjointed when it mattered for the Jets despite getting significantly more reps.

While Browns coach Hue Jackson was not ready to publicly commit to Mayfield as his starting quarterback for Week 4 vs. the Raiders shortly after the game, it seems all but certain that the rookie now has the job. After patiently waiting for his opportunity, he took it with both hands and so his time is now.
