The Cleveland Browns are signing 6-foot-6 tight end Rico Gathers, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

In a corresponding move, the Browns will release tight end Orson Charles.

Gathers, 25, is a former sixth-round pick of the 2016 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys. He played college basketball with the Baylor Bears before declaring for the draft. He never played with the Baylor football team. Gathers was a star basketball player in high school before earning All-Big 12 honors in college and changing his career path to the gridiron.

Rico Gathers has had a bumpy road in the NFL. After joining the Cowboys, he was sent to the practice squad and later suffered a concussion when he made the roster in 2017. Then, in 2018, he was charged with possession of marijuana, although he still made Dallas's roster again.

He ended up making his NFL debut with the ‘Boys on September 16, 2018, and appeared in 15 games for Dallas last year. Gathers recorded three receptions for 45 yards without any touchdowns.

Orson Charles is a journeyman TE/fullback who was selected in the fourth round of the 2012 draft by the Cincinnati Bengals. The 28-year-old Georgia product spent two seasons with the Bengals, appearing in 29 games, before signing with the New Orleans Saints and moving to their practice squad. Then, Charles played a combined handful of games for the Detroit Lions and Kansas City Chiefs before landing with Cleveland in 2018.

Charles appeared in 13 games for the Browns last season, recording three receptions for 23 yards.
