The Cleveland Browns were never shy about designating quarterback Tyrod Taylor as the starter going into training camp. However, quarterback Baker Mayfield's stellar preseason debut has raised speculation regarding whether or not that notion still holds true.

It appears quarterbacks coach Ken Zampese has not swayed from the decision one bit. According to Mary Kay Cabot of cleveland.com, Zampese says the Browns will remain patient with Mayfield:

“I think you said the right words, national hype,” said Zampese. “We have our plan, we're sticking to it and when it changes we'll all know.”

Zampese doubled down on Taylor's status by adamantly attempting to end any further questions about the quarterback situation.

“He's our guy, and that's what he is,” said Zampese. “And to keep bringing it up is the only reason why anybody put a cloud in anybody's head. So let's get on with him being the guy and let's get on to playing and winning and doing what we're supposed to do and what we're here for.”

Zampese's comments should come as no surprise. Cleveland had acquired Taylor knowing full well they were going to take a quarterback with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. The addition of a competent quarterback like Taylor would allow Cleveland to compete immediately while developing their future franchise player.

However, he looked every bit the No. 1 overall pick against the New York Giants after completing 11 of his 20 attempts for 212 yards and two touchdowns. As a result, it is clear that the consensus would rather see Mayfield make his first career start as soon as possible.

Fortunately, the Browns are not giving in to the temptation of switching things up after just one preseason game. That said, the starting job seems to be Taylor's to lose barring injury.
