Earlier this month, Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield ripped running back Duke Johnson for his trade demand, saying that his situation was “self-inflicted” and said “you're either on this train or you're not.”

Mayfield's comments caused some ripples, and there were reports that some of Mayfield's teammates even went to him afterward and told him that making those remarks publicly was not appropriate.

Well, now, former Browns quarterback Josh McCown is the latest individual to disapprove of what Mayfield did, saying the young quarterback should have kept that type of stuff private:

“I’ve been in a locker room with Duke Johnson,” said Mayfield on ESPN. “Duke Johnson is a pro’s pro. I love that guy. To make those kind of comments and do it publicly – if you have an issue, go to him privately and talk about it. To do it publicly, I understand the quarterback is the face of the franchise and he’s trying to send the head coach’s message and the organization’s message, but at the end of the day, that’s a close line you’re crossing. And you don’t want to do that to a guy. Then the other guys in the locker room start looking around going, ‘am I next?' That creates problems. That is what he has to be careful of.”

McCown makes a great point. If Mayfield were really that frustrated with Johnson, he should have gone to him privately and aired out his grievances rather than saying it through the media.

Now, Mayfield may have created some trust issues with his teammates, and that is the absolute last thing you want in a locker room.

Mayfield is known for his flamboyant personality, and that's what makes him who he is, but sometimes you need to curb it for the betterment of your team. Hopefully, Mayfield learns that as he grows.
