Is the running back position slowly deteriorating? At the very least, it seems to be undervalued right now. Two of the top three running backs in the league (Saquon Barkley and Josh Jacobs) were not given long-term extensions despite their excellent play last season. It's cause the running backs of the NFL to assess the situation. With that in mind, Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb dropped his take on the crisis that he and his fellow RBs are experiencing, per Chris Easterling.

Essentially, Chubb is saying that the more production a running back has, the more it hurts them in the long run. Even if you get incredible yardage on a ton of carries, teams will want them tone down their production. The Browns running back then says that “if we’re taking the most risk and doing the most, we should be valued more.”

Nick Chubb also recognizes that he could very well be in the same position as Barkley and Jacobs in a year. The Browns RB is considered as one of the best, if not the best, running back in the league. However, Cleveland might not be interesting in giving him a long-term deal. That could pose some problems down the line, as Chubb could fall to the tried-and-tested tactic of “give your bellcow RB a franchise tag”.

Chubb was part of a meeting of top running backs aimed at discussing solutions to their problems. It's unclear what changes could happen, though, as realistically changes to contract structures can only happen after the expiry of the current CBA. Regardless, it would greatly benefit the Browns RB (as well as other RBs) to have changes made to their current situation.
