Robert Griffin III reveals what Browns should do with Deshaun Watson, Baker Mayfield

What was supposed to be an exciting season for the Cleveland Browns has turned into a nightmare suspension. After acquiring and signing Deshaun Watson to a mega-deal, the quarterback may not even play for them this season. It’s the worst-possible scenario for this team after they made that deal.

Now, the Browns are facing the very real possibility that they won’t have their star QB under center next season. However, for Robert Griffin III, there’s a backup plan right in front of Cleveland: Baker Mayfield. (via The Rich Eisen Show)

“I think the Browns should offer the olive branch to Baker and ask him to stay if Deshaun Watson gets suspended for a significant amount of time. Baker’s proven in this city he can go win a playoff game, get you to the playoffs and do all those things. The bottom line is Baker Mayfield is better than Jacoby Brissett.”

The Browns infamously destroyed any goodwill with Baker Mayfield in their pursuit of Deshaun Watson. At one point, they insinuated that Mayfield was immature by saying that they “need an adult”. It was such a bizarre attack on the quarterback that ended the franchise’s long-time playoff drought back in 2018.

Since then, Mayfield has wanted out of Cleveland (for good reason). With a potential one-year suspension for Watson, the Browns will need to swallow their pride and ask for Mayfield to return. As Griffin III pointed out, Mayfield is miles ahead of the other Cleveland quarterbacks when he’s healthy. Whether they do that, though, is a completely different story.
