As it turns out, the Cleveland Browns have yet to completely move on from Dez Bryant. The free agent wide receiver recently met with the Browns this August, but left without a contract and still unemployed, despite plenty of signs pointing to an imminent partnership.

However, according to Michael Silver of the NFL Network, the team’s interest in luring Bryant remains high.

“I’m told that the Browns are very interested in Dez Bryant, believe that he is still a very good receiver, don’t see his drop-off the last couple of years statistically as a sign that he is on the decline, and simply want to add as many playmakers as they can.”

It’s not hard to see why the Browns would still like to add Bryant to their team. For one, they need depth behind Jarvis Landry and Josh Gordon, especially after they shipped Corey Coleman to the Buffalo Bills earlier his month.

The Browns may have also developed a greater sense of urgency to sign an additional and proven playmaker downfield following a serious-looking wrist injury sustained by quarterback Tyrod Taylor during a preseason match against the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday.

If Taylor would miss time, that means Baker Mayfield is likely going to take over as the team’s starter, and having an experienced veteran like Bryant can make life easier for the rookie signal-caller.

Bryant has not had 1,000 receiving yards in any of the last three seasons. Last year, he had 838 receiving yards and six touchdowns on 69 receptions, decent figures but pales in comparison to his production during the height of his career.

The Browns and Bryant are more than a good match, but the question of whether the two sides can come up with a deal before the regular season is one that remains to be answered.
